...FOR POSITIVE ANSWERS TO TOUGH QUESTIONS IN BUSINESS AND LIFE.
A WARM WORD FROM GRAHAM

Welcome Note

shoes

There is something very special about receiving and welcoming visitors to my place, be they those with familiar faces and voices who have tasted my hospitality many times, or those whose names are hitherto unknown to me and whose shoes have never crossed my threshold before. Whenever someone chooses to pitch up at my doorstep in friendship and with goodwill, I am filled anew with the keen excitement of an interrupted journey restarted or with the curious anticipation of the first gripping chapter of what will soon become a favourite novel.

So, whether you are an established friend with whom I have shared thoughts and experiences, or an unknown first-timer to my address, you are invited in equal measure to enter my world and to spend as much or as little of your time with me as you feel comfortable to spare. Consider yourself welcome and at home! Thank you so much for popping in.

A Shadow Falls

Our family recently experienced the sadness of the death of its patriarch – a kind, gentle yet formidable presence who graced our lives with his caring, compassionate and oh-so-correct manners and gently playful teasing and leg-pulling. A husband and father whose every breath was devoted to loving and protecting those in his care, always on hand with advice, support and the practical wisdom only a fully-lived life can bestow.

Waking up in the Mother City

I woke up in Cape Town today. In a part of the city that presents me with the most glorious vista in all the circumference of the earth. Of a granite massif rising majestically from the cold aquamarine waters of the Bay that carries its name. A city that nestles snugly in the embrace of its flat-topped mountain and its flanking peaks. Crowning the peninsula that embodies the very essence of the indomitable human spirit: that of hope which, in the words of the poet, springs eternal in the human breast.

Look through the Mirror

Life throws us a few right royal curved balls from time to time. Over the past month or so, I have joined the ranks of people who have had to deal with some of these, and the experience has given me a very sharply focused glimpse into what a world could be like that suddenly no longer looks quite like the one that you have come to expect day after day.

We all walk up to a mirror knowing instinctively what we’re going to see every time, and when a day comes along where that picture suddenly and dramatically no longer reflects back the image that you “knew” would stare back at you, it takes a brave and rather cool – no, ice cold! – individual not to draw in one’s breath and be stunned by what could suddenly have happened to change the picture so radically and so unexpectedly. And the oh-so-beguiling immediate reaction is to assume the foetal position, to retreat, to draw down the shutters and to exclude everything and everyone from the core of your world.
